Self generation of energy is big news and is a sustainable way for many households to lower their energy bills. A recent scheme in Ireland encourages homeowners to invest in Solar Energy Storage Systems. By investing in a Solar PV plus battery storage system, you could be eligible for a fixed grant of €1000 Euros for a system over 4KwH. Systems under 2 Kwh can qualify for a grant of €700 per kWp of solar installed.
With the end of the Feed in Tarrif for Solar only installs in the UK in March 2019, the Irish Government are streets ahead to incentivise battery storage in addition to solar. SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) will administer the funding focusing on self-consumption as it’s main objective. The climate action and environment minister, Denis Naughten, explained that a typical three bedroom semi-detached home can spend in excess of €1,800 on a solar PV system. This could save the homeowner approximately €220 per year on their energy bills.
Eligibility is straight forward. Occupied homes, built after 2011, are eligible to apply for the grant, and when approved, have a total of six months to undertake and complete the works through a registered contractor. The grant is then awarded as a single one off payment providing the install meets the scheme requirements.
The Scheme itself.
This scheme is the first of it’s kind helping citizens to generate their own power. It also allows homes to lower their dependence on the grid helping the Government contribute toward their climate action targets, set by the EU. Ireland, along with many other countries are some way off hitting their 2020 target and need to produce 1 million fewer tonnes of carbon each year, so every home really does count.
This scheme, although still in pilot stage, is planned to run until December 2020, however that may be extended should the scheme prove to be successful. Currently it’s being reviewed every 6 months having already helped hundreds of Irish homes get on track to becoming energy self sufficient.
